Meditation of Life
Balancing Meditation & Life
Life itself can be filled with stresses, burdens, and issues... if we choose. Life can also be filled with moments of reflection that lead to shifts and changes in awareness, expansions of consciousness. The trick is to balance Spirituality, Discovery Of Self, and Living A Physical Existence. What does it mean to bring it into balance? It means to strive to maintain that state of awareness and being where life itself flows freely with opportunities for expansion.
Don't get so caught up in living your Physical Existence that you forget why you're here. This is the easiest way to get lost in that deadly cycle of working to live. People have spent entire lifetimes working to live without ever discovering or creating a purpose. Some people experience so much pressure from living this way that sometime in their life, the dam breaks and they're left in a frenzy trying to discover purpose and intention.
Other people discover early on that life should have meaning and get so caught up in discovering themselves, that they neglect Physical Existence. These people end up finding themselves so lost in the clouds that they lose touch with reality and find themselves longing to be in that glow of Spirituality. They forget to live.
The balance is somewhere in between where we discover Spirituality even in the mundane reality of washing dishes or driving to work. We can create ways to Discover Self even in the midst of confrontations or arguments.
Discovering Meditation In Daily Life
Think back to a time when you found yourself caught up in a project so intensely, you discovered a deeper purpose for the project itself. Initially, this may have been something you were resisting, but by shifting your approach, you ended up gaining a deeper perspective of self.
Think about an argument or issue you had with an ex, or a break up that broke your world. Did there come a moment of clarity or epiphany where you discovered a higher purpose for your life?
Do we need these intense traumatic events to shift our perception and awareness? Maybe at first, until we discover that we have the power to make things happen. We have the power to create a meditation even in the little things.
Creating Meditation From Anything
The next time you feel yourself out of touch with Physical Existence, try this simple 30 second meditation, or create your own. This can be done anywhere, anytime, quickly and easily. The purpose is to inject meditation into your life, and practice until it becomes a way of living.
1. Wherever you are, close your eyes (obviously not while driving a vehicle or operating heavy machinery, duh)
2. Think about what you're doing and why you're there.
3. Observe any reactions based on past or future.
4. Ask yourself if those reactions really benefit this present moment, or are they taking away from this moment?
5. Let go of past experiences, or future expectations.
6. Remind yourself that you're here and now, in THIS moment.
7. Imagine yourself as a light, a beacon, the very center of your personal universe.
8. Imagine that light expanding to fill whatever room you're in.
9. Expand your awareness to those around you.
10. Imagine as that light expands, each person it touches begins to light their own beacon.
11. Bring yourself back, and notice any shift in your perception.
By practicing this exercise of being present in a moment, you may notice some subtle shifts in your world, or they could be dramatic shifts.
Most of all, have fun with it, play, explore, and see where it takes you.

Living A Spiritual Life
(An excerpt from the upcoming book De-mystifying Mysticism )
Life is a Spiritual Act
While the pursuit of personal spirituality is important in our work; we do this with the goal of achieving a unification of self; having peace and purpose in everything we do; physically, emotionally, mentally and spiritually. We believe that true Character Balance is based on the principle of how you do one thing is how you do all things. Tending to our needs and others under our care can and should be a spiritual act.
Usually articles like these are about what happens when we become too focused on our physical self. This article is coming from the OTHER end of the spectrum; what happens when we get out of balance with our spiritual self. Ironically, in the end, you kind of end up stuck in the same place.
When Spiritual Pursuits Disrupt Your Physical Life
Let's say you spend a lot of time and effort pursuing spiritual needs but not enough right effort taking care of physical needs and responsibility, like meeting your potential in a work situation or taking care of your health. Maybe you seem happy and connected on the outside but you aren't actively cleaning out your emotional closets. As a result of neglecting the physical and emotional and pursuing mostly the spiritual, you may eventually begin to live in the clouds, existing in a kind of euphoric manufactured spiritual ecstasy. You seldom check in with your body and emotions anymore, becoming blissfully unaware that you are in a state of imbalance until health or emotional issues come out of "nowhere" to warn you.
The Formula for Growth
You have Faith, isn't that enough? What you may have forgotten somewhere along your quest for spiritual growth is that Spiritual Faith is a contract. A contract is a Two-Way agreement. If you have been living by Faith but not doing your Work, Faith becomes a Moot Contract. Here's the delicate part; some of us have been taught that all you need is "Faith". Unfortunately, many place the most "spiritual" weight on the first and last parts of the formula; Faith (hoping for things unseen), and Grace (the paycheck). The second part of that formula is Work. In more traditional systems this formula looks like this: Faith + Works=Grace. In the world of Metaphysics the formula looks like this: Intention + Activated Desire=Manifestation. It's basically the same thing. Your hope PLUS your work = your work PLUS Divine Interest.
Faith with No Work equals NO PAYCHECK
Say you are a landscape architect hired to re-do a yard. You sign a contract to rip out the old dead plants and replace them with new grass, trees and flowers. But, you get distracted because you want to get back to that really good book about Miracles you've been reading. So, you do that instead of planning and researching for your client's yard. You get to the job on time, clean up the yard, plant a few last minute things you found at the nursery and take a look at what you've done. You tell yourself it's not a bad job, but since you haven't put the right effort and research into your Work, you don't really know. You figure that Grace is going to cover you since you have had Faith and have been doing your "spiritual" work. You go to collect the agreed upon fee and the unhappy owner pays you less than half of what you agreed on. You don't understand why the owner backed out of his end of the contract. You showed up and put in the hours, right? You complain to your friends over a beer later. But deep down you know why; you understood the Faith/Intention and Grace/Manifestation part, but you forgot the Work/Activated Desire part in the middle. You haven't lived up to your potential or your end of the bargain. How often in our lives have we rendered our Spiritual Contracts null and void and then blamed Divinity for letting us down?
With that in mind, let's re-create your landscape job and see how this can be looked at as a Spiritual Principle and how all areas of your life are truly interconnected:
You spend a few minutes reading from your Miracles book, meditate on the meaning of the passage you just read, spend a few hours researching the perfect plants for your client's yard, call local nurseries to make sure they are available and sketch out a design plan. You pick up the desired plants you reserved and install the yard in record time. The extra care shines through in your work. The homeowner is thrilled, gives you a $500.00 tip and recommends you to all his friends. You suddenly have more work than you could possibly have gotten by yourself. His friends send you their friends and pretty soon you have hired a whole company of workers that reflect your spiritual work ethic. It's a Miracle!
If you practice doing everyday things with the intention and effort to see and cultivate their innate spiritual meaning, you can never really be out of balance. You connect all parts of your life in an uninterrupted, authentic spiritual experience, understanding what you didn't quite see before; that truly everything is a spiritual experience.
